PIPER ALDERMAN- WINTER CLERKSHIP

Piper Alderman is looking for a number of ambitious and hard-working final year law students to join our 2024 Winter Clerkship program running from 17 June to 19 July working 5 days per week. As a law clerk you will be given the opportunity to do real legal work from the get-go, in a supportive and collaborative learning environment which encourages you to balance and blend your university commitments with work experience. We aim to build a strong pipeline of rising talent and as a result, we look to recruit our graduate lawyers from our clerkship program.

When you join us for a Winter Clerkship, you will see the opportunity to immerse yourself in interesting, thought-provoking tasks such as legal research for current matters, drafting correspondence and legal documents, attendance and note taking at client meetings, gathering and analysing case facts and collating documents for counsel briefing and court hearings. 

About you

  • Demonstrated academic excellence throughout your tertiary studies

    1. Thorough research skills and excellent attention to detail

    2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to draft basic correspondence

    3. An ability to demonstrate initiative and take a proactive approach to solving problems and building relationships

    4. An ability to digest instructions quickly and quality produce results

    5. Please note that you must be in your final year of your law degree to be eligible for this role

DISTRICT COURT - USHER TO A JUDGE

Location: District Court of Western Australia

500 Hay Street Perth, Western Australia

Job Type: Full Time

Qualification: Law Graduate or working towards Law Degree

Commencement Date: May 2024

Salary: $63,002

Applications are invited for the position of Usher to a District Court Judge. This is a full-time position and

appointment will be by contract of employment for a period of 12 months, with the opportunity to extend. There

may also be an opportunity to move from this role into an Associate position.

Role: The Usher will be required to:

• assist with the preparation of sentencing and hearing files and the distribution of files and paperwork at

the completion of hearings,

• preparation of courtrooms and operation of court electronic equipment,

• performs other duties required by the Judge which may include undertaking legal research on behalf of

the Judge and preparing evidence summaries.

• assist the Associate to ensure the court hearings proceed smoothly and efficiently.

• provide information and assistance to customers of the court in accordance with established policies and

procedures.

• make travel arrangements and be prepared to travel throughout the State for up to a two-week period,

three to four times per year.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to acquire a detailed understanding of a range of criminal and

civil matters and court procedures whilst working under the supervision of a member of the judiciary.

The successful applicant will be able to work as a member of a team, maintain confidentiality and be prepared to

work flexible hours from time to time; possess the ability to manage personal exposure to matters of a sensitive

and potentially emotionally disturbing nature (e.g. graphic and disturbing photographic material); the ability to

carefully and safely lift and move bulky equipment and important objects and possess a valid C Class drivers

licence.

Work related requirements: The following essential work related requirements may be assessed as part of the

selection process:

• Completion of a degree in Law, or in the final year of a degree in Law and willing to work full time.

• Communication and interpersonal skills.

• Time management and organisational skills.

• Research and analytical skills.

• Ability to interpret and apply legislation.

All employees of the Department of Justice are required to undergo a National Criminal History check. For

appointment to the position you must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia as defined by

the Commonwealth Immigration Act (if not currently held, must be acquired prior to commencement at

applicant’s expense).

Mining Access Legal (MAL)

Role: Clerk/Legal Secretary position

Part-time position: 3 days per week with ability to increase

About the company: Mining Access Legal (MAL) is a boutique law firm located on Adelaide Terrace, in East Perth. They deal with mining, energy and resource matters.

About the role: The role is primarily database management for MAL’s matters. This involves recording correspondence between different parties, flagging upcoming dates and deadlines, and noting other key matters activities. The role also entails paralegal responsibilities including drafting and filing documents with the court, and assisting the solicitors with research and reports. 

Role requirements:
